Last offseason, the Chicago Cubs had the opportunity to add a stalwart at third base, as they expressed interest in former All-Star Matt Chapman. However, Chapman received a better offer from the San Francisco Giants and signed with them instead.
So, just how much better was the Giants’ offer than that of the Cubs? Well, apparently the gap was significant, and Chapman—who proceeded to win a Gold Glove during his debut campaign in San Francisco—spoke about it recently.
“The Cubs had a lot of interest in me,” Chapman said, via The Athletic. “They were willing to do a one-year deal with me. There was just no way I could take the Cubs’ one-year deal, just for protection purposes. I was definitely considering it. I thought it would have been a good place to play. I thought they were a good team.”
This surely won’t be too surprising to Chicago fans, who have torched the Cubs for their skimpy spending in recent years. They currently have top prospect Matt Shaw at the hot corner, so as long as he materializes like the team hopes, this may be a case of no harm, no foul. But it’s still a troubling trend for Chicago regardless.
“Even if it was two with an opt-out after the first year, I would have really had to take a look at it. But they said with the way their money was, they could only do a one-year. I was just like, ‘That’s just too risky,'” Chapman added.
The 31-year-old went on to slash .247/.328/.463 with 27 home runs and 78 RBI over 647 plate appearances in 2024, even garnering some NL MVP consideration (he finished 11th in voting).
Shaw is a lifetime .303/.384/.522 hitter in the minor leagues, so perhaps he will make Cubs fans forget about Chapman in the near future. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that Chicago is refusing to spend money, and it doesn’t exactly bode well for Kyle Tucker’s upcoming free agency.
