The New York Yankees opened a series against the Chicago White Sox on Monday night at Rate Field and came away with a 9-5 victory.

Anthony Volpe contributed one hit, one RBI and one strikeout in the contest. The shortstop has remained a frequent subject of discussion among the team’s supporters throughout the current campaign.

During a recent installment of the BT Unleashed program, host Brandon Tierney welcomed guest Gary Sheffield Jr. for analysis. Sheffield Jr. expressed the view that Volpe, even with his shortcomings, possesses the ability to sustain an extended tenure in Major League Baseball.

“I think he’s going to be one of those guys. I saw that you get 10 years of service time, right? He’s one of those guys you’re like, man, how did he stick around for a decade? And you still have to be a good baseball player to do that. I think Volpe be around a decade… Not with this team… Anthony Volpe will be a second baseman,” Sheffield Jr. said.

Although Sheffield Jr. does not envision Volpe remaining with the Yankees for the long term, the forecast of a lengthy professional career stands out as noteworthy.

Volpe earned a Gold Glove Award in his debut season and helped the club reach the World Series the following year, yet he has struggled to fulfill the lofty projections placed upon him.

Selected in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft, the 25-year-old is progressing through his fourth major league season, all spent with New York.

His current numbers show a .250 batting average, 39 hits, one home run, 17 RBIs, 18 runs scored and seven stolen bases across 51 games.

The Yankees stand at 60-46 after 106 contests, placing them second in the American League East.

They have recorded a 6-4 mark in their past 10 outings and hold a 34-23 record in 57 road games.

New York trails the Tampa Bay Rays by 2.5 games in the division standings.Volpe’s defensive excellence as a rookie generated significant enthusiasm, but offensive consistency has proved more elusive in subsequent seasons.

Observers continue to debate his long-term role, with some suggesting a positional shift could extend his value in the league.

Sheffield Jr.’s comments add another layer to the ongoing conversation surrounding the young infielder’s future path.

The Yankees will look to build on the Monday win as they continue their series in Chicago.
