What lies ahead for Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors at the NBA trade deadline? This question has been on the minds of fans and pundits alike, especially given the team’s struggles this season.

The Warriors currently stand at a 20-24 record, far from their dominant form of previous years. Speculation has been rife about potential trades involving key players such as Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, and Gary Payton II, but a clear course of action remains elusive.

Unlike previous years, the trade landscape in the NBA is being influenced by new financial rules, including the second apron tax line, which has a direct impact on the Warriors. Their payroll exceeds a whopping $225 million in salaries this season, making them the league’s top taxpayers.

The Warriors are faced with a complex decision, as they weigh their financial constraints against the talent already present on their roster. Despite injuries plaguing the team at present, players like Chris Paul and Gary Payton II play crucial roles in the Warriors’ second unit.

With a limited market offering clear upgrade options, it appears that head coach Steve Kerr is inclined to retain their current roster.

“We’re not going to find better players than those guys [Chris Paul and Gary Payton II] in a trade. It’s exceedingly rare to make a deal where you can upgrade your talent to that level. I’m excited about getting those guys back. Moses [Moody] too. We’ve been shorthanded these last couple of weeks, but all three of those guys can really help us for sure.”

One of the primary issues the Warriors have faced this season is the inconsistency in player availability. Apart from the early-season suspension of Draymond Green, injuries have kept the team from fielding a complete lineup consistently. Players like Payton, Paul, and Moses Moody have been sidelined due to injuries, contributing to the team’s underwhelming performance.

Considering the impending trade deadline, the Warriors find themselves with limited options to significantly enhance their chances of turning their season around.

The potential acquisition of Pascal Siakam could have been a game-changer, but he has already been traded to the Indiana Pacers. The Warriors acknowledge that they possess the talent required to win now, and their focus is on keeping the team intact and getting everyone back on the court.

The Warriors are currently just 1.5 games away from entering the play-in tournament picture in the competitive Western Conference. A successful winning streak could transform their situation, and with the trade deadline looming just one week away, the team’s fate remains uncertain.
