The prevailing consensus has long suggested that Kirk Cousins would rejoin the Minnesota Vikings during this offseason. However, recent reports regarding his contract demands may compel us to reconsider his most likely destination in free agency.

According to Charley Waters of The St. Paul Pioneer Press, Cousins is now seeking a two-year contract worth a staggering $90 million in guaranteed money. Waters goes on to assert that the Vikings are unequivocally not inclined to offer such an exorbitant contract.

Minnesota’s General Manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, has emphasized the team’s desire to retain Cousins while maintaining financial flexibility. It is difficult to envision the Vikings committing to an annual salary of $45 million for Cousins, considering its financial implications.

Cousins will enter his 36th year at the outset of the next season and is recuperating from a significant Achilles injury. It is reasonable to acknowledge why the Vikings might have reservations about bringing him back into the fold.

It is worth noting that Cousins exhibited brilliance before his injury during the previous season, amassing 2,331 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He completed 69.5 percent of his passes and boasted a passer rating of 103.8 in just eight games. Nevertheless, questions loom regarding his post-injury effectiveness.

Cousins, a product of Michigan State University, entered the NFL when the Washington Redskins drafted him in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He spent his initial three seasons as a backup to Robert Griffin III before assuming the role of starting quarterback in 2015.

During his tenure as Washington’s starting quarterback, Cousins earned one Pro Bowl selection.

Subsequent to his time in the nation’s capital, the Barrington, Illinois native ventured into free agency and landed with the Vikings in 2018. Over the past six years, Kirk Cousins has continued to be a prominent figure in Minnesota, securing three additional Pro Bowl nods along the way.
