The 2025 season has proven challenging for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy in his first year as the primary starter. The young passer has faced inconsistent play when healthy and significant absences due to various ailments, limiting his overall impact.

McCarthy has battled multiple setbacks, including a high-ankle sprain, a concussion, and lately a hairline fracture in his throwing hand. These issues have sidelined him for seven games throughout the campaign.

In the nine appearances he managed, the 22-year-old has accumulated 1,450 passing yards, 11 touchdown throws, and 12 interceptions. His completion percentage stands at 57.3, accompanied by a passer rating of 71.2.

This downturn has undoubtedly affected star wideout Justin Jefferson, who is enduring his least productive year statistically. Jefferson sits at 947 yards entering the final regular-season contest against the Green Bay Packers and risks falling short of 1,000 yards for the first time in his professional career.

Amid speculation about McCarthy’s long-term role in Minnesota as the team heads into 2026, Jefferson has publicly endorsed keeping the quarterback as the leader of the offense.

“I would love for him to be here,” Jefferson said. “Of course, I would love for him to be the quarterback, especially off of this year. I feel like he needs to show everybody and prove to everybody that he is that top-tier quarterback.”

Minnesota invested heavily in McCarthy, drafting him 10th overall in 2024 and moving up one spot to secure him. The former Michigan standout carries significant organizational commitment.

“But I feel like it starts in the offseason, starts that offseason work and building that connection, eliminating those habits that he had that we felt hindered him throughout the season,” Jefferson said. “… But he’s still young. He still has learning to do and growing to do. That’s all part of the game. But it’s up to me to require more from him and to work with him more.”

McCarthy sat out his entire 2024 rookie year recovering from a knee injury. Combined with his limited availability in 2025, he remains far behind typical developmental timelines for quarterbacks at this stage.

The signal caller from Evanston, Illinois, has displayed promising moments amid the struggles, indicating potential that could emerge with further refinement and experience.

Jefferson’s comments highlight a commitment to partnership, emphasizing collaborative improvement during the upcoming offseason to address mechanical issues and foster better on-field chemistry.

As the Vikings prepare for their Week 18 matchup against the Packers, the focus extends beyond the immediate game to building a foundation for future success with McCarthy at the helm.

This endorsement from one of the league’s premier receivers could influence front-office decisions regarding quarterback stability and potential additions for competition or depth in the coming months.

The 2025 campaign, marked by injuries and inconsistency, serves as a learning chapter rather than a definitive judgment on McCarthy’s capabilities in the eyes of key teammates like Jefferson.

Ultimately, Jefferson’s stance underscores belief in the quarterback’s upside, advocating for patience and dedicated effort to unlock the high draft pick’s full potential moving forward.
