Not much was expected out of the USA during the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup. They had a relatively difficult draw, with Pakistan and India both being part of their Group for Round Robin play, along with Canada and Ireland.
Pakistan and India were heavy favorites to advance to the Super Eight, but the USA had other plans. They started the tournament on the right foot, defeating Canada with relative ease. After a huge upset over Pakistan in their second match in a Super Over (an overtime period in cricket), they were in the driver’s seat to advance.
A loss in their third match to India didn’t hurt their chances too much. All they needed to do in their match against Ireland was not lose. It was anti-climactic, but the USA advanced to the Super Eight after their match against Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The match was abandoned because of poor weather conditions. Rains and flooding have crushed Florida in recent days, leaving the outfield of the field too wet to play. The no-result of the match gave the USA five points in the round-robin, clinching a spot to advance along with India.
While it didn’t rain early Friday, there wasn’t enough time for officials to get the outfield in playable condition. Rain started up again in the afternoon, leading to the third abandoned match of the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup.
That will be something to keep an eye on as Florida is set to host two matches this weekend to finish up play in Group A. India will wrap up pool play against Canada on Saturday, while Ireland is set to play Pakistan on Sunday.
This is a huge accomplishment for Team USA. Not only did they advance in their first World Cup appearance as a host nation, but they are now automatically qualified for the T20 Cricket World Cup in 2026 which is set to be held in Sri Lanka and India.
