The 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 could be without one of the biggest names in golf this weekend. World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is in danger of missing the cut after having one of his worst rounds in recent history.
After putting together a 1-over 71 on Thursday to start the tournament, the difficulty of Pinehurst No. 2 got the best of Scottie Scheffler. He carded a 4-over 74, putting him at +5 for the tournament an in danger of missing the cut.
On Friday, Scheffler failed to record at least one birdie for the first time in 168 rounds, snapping his impressive streak. Instead, he recorded two bogeys and one double bogey to potentially end his U.S. Open earlier than anyone would have predicted.
Normally calm, cool and collected on the course, Scottie Scheffler showed some of his frustration on the 18th tee Friday. After an errant tee shot went left, he slammed his driver against the ground. He followed that up by throwing his tee in disgust after a very frustrating afternoon.
“It was definitely a grind,” Scheffler said. “Yesterday I felt like I played really well and got a lot out of my game, which I feel like I’ve done a good job of this year. Today was kind of the opposite.”
As the case has been for a while now, Scottie Scheffler was lapping the field when it came to shots gained with approach shots. But, his short game and putting, which are key to finding success at Pinehurst No. 2, both abandoned him through two rounds.
“Playing poor golf is not fun, but I like the challenging aspect of it,” Scheffler said. “The unpredictability of the native areas maybe got to me a little bit.”
With Scottie Scheffler well out of contention, if he even makes the cut, there will be plenty of storylines to follow over the weekend. Bryson DeChambeau is playing well and is currently tied with three other golfers two shots off the lead.
Currently holding down first place is Ludvig Aberg, who is 6-under through the tournament at the time of publishing. He fired off a 4-under 66 in the opening round and got off to a hot start Friday, going 2-under through seven.
