The Green Bay Packers Must Make This One Move Now

The Green Bay Packers need to sign free-agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney before training camp fully ramps up.

Micah Parsons is recovering from a torn ACL and meniscus procedure. He is expected to start the season on the physically unable to perform list and miss at least the first four games, with a patient timeline potentially stretching the absence toward midseason.

The Packers already thinned the edge room by trading Rashan Gary and losing Kingsley Enagbare in free agency. Lukas Van Ness is the clear starter opposite the vacant spot, but the depth behind him consists largely of unproven second-year players and a rookie.

Clowney, 33, recorded 8.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and strong pressure rates in 13 games for the Dallas Cowboys last season. He started only six contests yet remained highly effective as a rotational piece.

That production came on a modest one-year deal. A similar short-term contract would carry limited financial risk for Green Bay while delivering immediate help.

New defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s scheme rewards versatile, scheme-independent rushers. Clowney has played in multiple fronts throughout his career and has said he can dominate in any alignment.

Adding him creates a bridge until Parsons returns and a reliable rotational partner afterward. It also reduces the snap burden on Van Ness and gives younger rushers such as Barryn Sorrell and Dani Dennis-Sutton time to develop without being thrown into every critical situation.

The Packers’ early schedule includes winnable games that could set the tone for a playoff push. Strong pass-rush production in those contests would keep the defense competitive and protect Jordan Love’s offense from facing prolonged drives.

Clowney has bounced between teams in recent years, but that experience has made him a proven hired gun who arrives ready. He does not require a full training camp to contribute.

Green Bay sits in a competitive window with Love entering his fourth year as starter. Waiting on internal development alone is a gamble the franchise cannot afford while Parsons recovers.

Four teams are already showing interest in Clowney. The Packers should act decisively before another contender claims him.

Signing the veteran is the clearest low-risk, high-upside move available to stabilize the defensive front for 2026.
