With Quinn Ewers, a three-year starter, announcing his decision to enter the NFL Draft on Wednesday morning, the Texas Longhorns officially enter a new chapter—the Arch Manning era.
As the grandson of Archie Manning and nephew to Peyton and Eli Manning, Arch brings an impressive football pedigree. While he’s seen limited action as a backup over the past two seasons, he now steps up as the team’s starting quarterback.
This transition marks a significant leap for the talented young player. Luckily, Manning is stepping into a role supported by a strong infrastructure both within the program and externally.
Following Ewers’ draft declaration, former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy offered words of wisdom for Manning during an appearance on Underdog’s “Clean Pocket” podcast.
“Arch is walking into a great opportunity,” McCoy stated.”Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Go out there and be you. Play to your strengths. We’re all different as quarterbacks. We all have an edge somehow. If Arch is smart, he’ll figure out his edge.”
McCoy emphasized Manning’s athletic ability and strong arm, particularly his deep passing skills. He suggested that Manning collaborate closely with quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee and head coach Steve Sarkisian to hone his play-calling confidence.
“He knows he can move, is athletic and can throw a great deep ball. He needs to sit down with [quarterbacks coach] AJ Milwee and Sark [head coach Steve Sarkisian] and figure out the things he loves. Things that he can call anytime and get a completion. When the season rolls around, Texas will be in a great spot. There are playmakers all around him. They are very well-coached. Arch just has to attack and have that chip on your shoulder. Texas has made it to the final four two years in a row; what are we going to do to make it all the way?”
McCoy, who took over as the Longhorns’ starter in 2006 following Vince Young’s legendary national championship run, understands the challenges of succeeding a prominent quarterback.
Though Ewers might not have achieved the same legendary status as Young, his departure still leaves high expectations for Manning.
“If you’re Arch and you’re going into this off-season, how do you attack it?” McCoy said. “How do you prepare? What do you do? There’s so much value in him being in the program for the last two years and getting to see a guy like Quinn Ewers on a day-to-day basis.”
With Manning at the helm, the Longhorns embark on a promising new era filled with potential and lofty expectations.
It will be very interesting to see if he can live up to the hype and rise to the occasion, or if the pressure becomes too much for him. Betting in the first option would be a wise choice.
