Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White expressed appreciation for the WNBA’s swift response to a controversial on-court moment involving star player Caitlin Clark, yet she stressed the importance of stronger performance from officials moving forward. The incident has sparked fresh discussions about player safety and the consistency of game management in the league.

During the second quarter of Monday’s matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, Clark lost her footing while driving toward the basket and tumbled to the floor. In the scramble for possession that followed, Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas made contact with Clark’s throat area using her fist.

No penalty was assessed on the play in the moment. League officials later examined the sequence after the contest concluded and classified it as a non-basketball act. They determined that Thomas had recklessly struck Clark in a vulnerable spot.

As a result of the review, the WNBA elevated the call to a Flagrant 2 and handed Thomas a one-game suspension. The decision underscored the league’s commitment to addressing dangerous plays even after the fact.

White shared her perspective with reporters on Friday, highlighting both the positive and the shortcomings of how the situation was handled. She acknowledged the value of post-game intervention while pointing out that such fouls need to be spotted immediately.

“I think the biggest thing for me is that we have to see it in real time,” White said. “I mean, yes, I’m thankful that the league went back and used their ability to go back and review it, but these are things that we can’t miss in real time. We’ve got to be better.”

The coach made clear that real-time recognition by referees is essential to maintaining fairness and protecting athletes on the court. She believes the league possesses the tools to catch these moments live but must continue sharpening those skills.

Beyond the specific play, White called for greater overall consistency in officiating across games. She suggested that repeated improvement in this area would help build trust among players, coaches, and fans alike.

With the suspension now in effect and attention focused on referee performance, the WNBA faces ongoing pressure to refine its standards. Recent high-profile events have placed the spotlight firmly on how games are called and how quickly corrective measures are applied.

As the season progresses, observers will closely monitor whether the league introduces additional training or protocols for officials.

The hope is that proactive steps will reduce similar incidents and ensure the game’s integrity remains intact for everyone involved.
