Only a year ago, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin solidified his position as the longest-tenured head coach across the four primary professional sports leagues in the United States. This milestone came after the retirement of Gregg Popovich, the longtime leader of the San Antonio Spurs.
Today, however, speculation abounds regarding whether Tomlin might soon depart from his role with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran coach has not guided his team to a postseason victory since overcoming a Kansas City squad quarterbacked by Alex Smith in the 2016 playoff divisional round.
Over the past several weeks, supporters have voiced strong demands for a change in leadership. Adding fuel to the discussion, retired Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger weighed in on the potential shift during an episode of his podcast.
“Maybe it’s a clean-house time. Maybe it’s time,” Roethlisberger said on his “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger” podcast. “I like Coach Tomlin. I have a lot of respect for Coach Tomlin, but maybe it’s best for him, too.”
Tomlin is gearing up for a pivotal end-of-season matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, where the AFC North championship hangs in the balance. Victory would secure a home postseason contest for the triumphant side, whereas defeat might signal major changes in leadership for the defeated team. The job security of both Tomlin and Baltimore’s John Harbaugh has become a focal point in recent discussions.
An NFL Network insider, Ian Rapoport, indicated that dismissal is unlikely for either leader. Nonetheless, there remains a chance that Tomlin could choose to pursue different opportunities.
“As far as Tomlin goes, he will not be fired – one of the best and most respected head coaches in the NFL,” Rapoport said. “There is a possibility, though, that he decides to step away and say, ‘You know what? I’ve been doing it for long enough, I’ve been killing it for long enough,’ and step back – do some TV and maybe reassess his coaching future at another date.”
The contest between Pittsburgh and Baltimore is scheduled for Sunday evening at 8:20 p.m. Eastern Time. Viewers can catch the action on NBC or stream it via Peacock.
This high-stakes rivalry game carries immense implications beyond the immediate standings. A win would potentially quiet some of the growing criticism.
Conversely, a loss could intensify questions about the direction of the franchise, especially given the extended absence of playoff success under Tomlin’s tenure.
Despite the pressure, reports consistently emphasize that any departure would likely stem from Tomlin’s personal decision rather than organizational action, underscoring his strong standing within the league.
