The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a state of uncertainty at the quarterback position heading into the 2026 NFL season, with future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers yet to commit to returning. The team recently brought back his longtime head coach, Mike McCarthy, which has sparked speculation about whether the reunion could influence the veteran signal-caller’s choice.
Rodgers, who turns 43 in the coming months, addressed his situation openly during a recent appearance on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show. He explained that the Steelers have not imposed any timeline for him to reach a conclusion.
“There’s been no deadline that’s been put in front of me,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers emphasized his current status as a free agent, noting the absence of any formal contract discussions or offers from the organization.
“There’s no contract offer or anything, so there’s nothing that I’m having to debate between. I’m a free agent. … I’m enjoying my time with my wife and enjoying this part of the off season, and I think there’s conversations to be had down the line, but right now, there hasn’t been any progressive conversations. I love Mike [McCarthy], and Mike and I have kept some contact over the years.”
The lack of urgency from Pittsburgh’s front office reflects a patient strategy, allowing Rodgers the space to weigh his options without immediate pressure. This approach comes amid ongoing questions about whether the quarterback will pursue another year in the league or step away after a storied career that includes multiple MVP awards and a Super Bowl victory.
Meanwhile, the Steelers’ quarterback room remains a primary concern for analysts and fans alike. Without a firm commitment from Rodgers, the team must prepare for various scenarios, including potentially bringing in another experienced passer or even drafting one if the right opportunity arises.
ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. recently weighed in on Pittsburgh’s plans with his latest mock draft projection for the first round. With the No. 21 overall selection, he envisions the Steelers bypassing the quarterback class entirely in favor of bolstering their offensive line. Kiper admitted the quarterback position remains a massive question mark, but he still opted to select former Penn State star offensive guard Olaivavega Ioane with the No. 21 pick.
Kiper provided context for steering clear of a quarterback at that spot, pointing out that the premier prospects at the position had already been chosen earlier.
“The Steelers’ quarterback situation is still a big question. Will Aaron Rodgers return? Will another veteran step in — such as Kirk Cousins? Or will Pittsburgh target a signal-caller in the draft? No matter what the Steelers plan to do, the top two quarterbacks are off the board here, and there isn’t a third one worthy of a Day 1 selection,” Kiper said.
Instead of addressing the quarterback need directly, Kiper highlighted the value in replacing a key departed player along the interior line.
“Instead, Pittsburgh can try to replace Isaac Seumalo, who signed with the Cardinals. Ioane is the top pure guard in the class, with the power to physically move pass rushers out of the way and the light feet to erase second-level defenders. He didn’t give up any sacks last season,” he added.
Selecting a dominant guard like Ioane could serve multiple purposes for the Steelers. It would strengthen protection up front, which is crucial regardless of who ultimately lines up under center. A more reliable offensive line might also make the team more appealing to Rodgers if he contemplates a return, offering him better chances to extend plays and reduce injury risk in what could be his final campaign.
Pittsburgh’s decision-making process in the coming weeks and months will likely hinge on Rodgers’ eventual answer, combined with how the draft board falls and any potential veteran additions in free agency. By prioritizing trench warfare in projections like Kiper’s, the Steelers signal a commitment to building a sturdy foundation that supports long-term success at the most important position.
The Steelers solidifying the trenches might be one way to ensure Rodgers comes back for another year, creating an environment where a veteran like him feels confident in performing at a high level once more. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will remain on Pittsburgh’s quarterback saga and how it shapes their roster-building strategy.
