The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center is keeping a close eye on a widespread severe thunderstorm threat that could unfold across much of the eastern United States on Tuesday.
Forecasters have outlined an enhanced risk of severe weather stretching from parts of the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic region, signaling that conditions could get quite active.
At the heart of this setup is an upper-level trough moving through the area, accompanied by several smaller disturbances that will help stir up the atmosphere.
On the ground, a cold front will be pushing eastward through the Midwest, while a prefrontal trough develops ahead of it across western and central New York down into the Mid-Atlantic.

That kind of environment often leads to damaging winds as the main concern, though hail and even a few tornadoes can’t be ruled out where individual cells stay discrete and maintain their rotation. The enhanced risk zone covers a sizable area including southern Indiana, northeast Kentucky, southern and eastern Ohio, West Virginia, northern Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Cities like Pittsburgh, Lexington, and Youngstown fall within this higher-threat corridor, where the combination of moisture, instability, and shear could produce the most robust storms.
Broader slight and marginal risks extend even farther, reaching into the Northeast as far as New York City and Philadelphia, as well as parts of the Midwest and Southeast.
While temperatures aloft are on the warmer side, which might temper the hail threat somewhat, the main story remains the potential for widespread damaging winds if storms organize well into clusters or lines.
Residents in these areas should stay weather-aware, especially during the afternoon and evening when the threat will likely peak. Have a plan in place for power outages, flying debris, or localized flooding, as these kinds of setups can produce quick-moving, impactful weather.
