PGA star Scottie Scheffler had a wild PGA Championship. He recorded some of the best rounds of his career in a major at Valhalla, but what people will remember mostly is what happened Friday morning before his second round.
While driving to the course, Scottie Scheffler was involved in what turned out to be a huge misunderstanding. With traffic stopped outside of the golf club because of a fatality a few hours earlier when a man was struck by a shuttle bus, he was looking for a way in.
What ensued was Scottie Scheffler eventually being arrested and booked by Louisville Metro Police detective Brian Gillis. He was released less than two hours before his tee time and faced four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer.
That charge, along with the other three, have all officially been dropped. As shared by Mark Schlabach of ESPN, the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office said it would not pursue the case. Mike O’Connell, the Jefferson County Attorney asked for the charges to be dismissed with prejudice.
“Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler,” O’Connell said. “Mr. Scheffler’s characterization that this was a ‘big misunderstanding’ is corroborated by the evidence. The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective [Bryan] Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler. However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.”
On May 17th, Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Gillis, who alleged that he was dragged after Scheffler accelerated his car. His body cam was not turned on, which in part led to him being disciplined.
Steve Romines, the attorney for Scheffler, revealed that they considered pursuing civil litigation. But, that wasn’t what the PGA star wanted, as he is hoping to put all of this behind him as soon as possible.
Despite the unprecedented situation, Scottie Scheffler still played marvelously in Round 2. He fired a 5-under 66, putting himself in contention near the top of the leaderboard. But, a tough Round 3 ended his streak of 42 rounds of par or better golf.
He ended up finishing tied for eighth, carding a four-round total of 13-under. Xander Schauffele was the winner of the PGA Championship, taking home the first major title of his career.
