The San Francisco 49ers remain in contention to land the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff picture, with an opportunity to challenge a direct competitor for that ranking in their upcoming matchup.

An important game against the Chicago Bears is on the horizon on Sunday Night Football, as the team closely watches the condition of standout tight end George Kittle, who sustained a minor ankle injury during a decisive 48-27 win against the Indianapolis Colts.

Kittle indicated that the issue arose after being tackled in a manner he believed involved a hip-drop technique.

The accomplished veteran, a seven-time Pro Bowler, had his ankle taped and tried to continue participating, but coach Kyle Shanahan noted that the ankle kept “stiffening up,” ultimately forcing Kittle to leave the contest after recording seven catches for 115 yards and one score.

Following the matchup, Kittle expressed confidence that it was not a severe high ankle sprain and mentioned he would take it “one day at a time and we’ll go from there.”

However, recent developments suggest Kittle potentially missing the game against the Bears.

“49ers TE George Kittle, listed as questionable for Sunday night due to a sprained ankle that prevented him from practicing last week, is ‘highly unlikely’ to play vs. the Bears,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Even though he has appeared in only 10 contests this year, Kittle has accumulated 52 catches for 599 yards and seven touchdowns, topping the squad in average receiving yards per game.

The 49ers, holding an 11-4 record like their opponents, are poised to enter this critical showdown between two strong teams potentially missing a key offensive weapon.

This high-stakes clash could influence playoff positioning significantly, as both squads vie for the No. 1 seed heading into the postseason.
