Two decades after Aaron Rodgers stepped into the NFL, the league features a fascinating connection through Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, whose father, Deion Sanders, was still active when Rodgers was drafted in 2005.

Rodgers, now guiding the Pittsburgh Steelers, sees notable parallels with the young Browns signal-caller, especially in their unexpected paths to professional opportunities.

In the 2005 draft, Rodgers was widely regarded as a premier quarterback talent but slipped to the 24th pick, landing with Green Bay.

Shedeur Sanders experienced an even more pronounced drop in the 2025 draft, falling to the fifth round where Cleveland selected him at No. 144 overall.

The veteran quarterback has closely tracked the rookie’s progression, from his time at Jackson State under his father to his tenure at Colorado, a program transitioning from the Pac-12.

Rodgers expressed support for Sanders’ development in that environment.

“It was a tough draft slide, obviously a much longer wait than mine was,” Rodgers said. “It seems like he’s been patient, worked on his craft and been playing pretty good these last few weeks.”

Like Rodgers, who spent his early years apprenticing behind Brett Favre in Green Bay, Sanders has faced questions about adapting from a college system perceived as favorable to quarterbacks.

Cleveland’s quarterback situation evolved rapidly this season, starting with veteran Joe Flacco, then shifting to third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel, before Sanders stepped in following Gabriel’s concussion.

Despite limited preparation with the first-team offense, Sanders has demonstrated resilience amid challenges, including one of the league’s weakest offensive lines and receiving groups, while connecting on several impressive long completions.

Though his record stands at just one win so far, Sanders has generated buzz as a potential long-term starter for the Browns heading into next year.

Both quarterbacks share exceptional precision on deep throws, faced doubts about their pro readiness, and exhibit a calm, confident demeanor on the field.
