As the regular season winds down, the MLB offseason is set to be dominated by free agent speculation. Several high-profile stars in their final years of team control are preparing to test the open market, with sluggers like former San Diego Padres outfielder Juan Soto and Brewers shortstop Willy Adames leading the charge.
One name that stands out is New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, whose contract negotiations will undoubtedly be one of the key storylines this winter.
Alonso, who was recently linked to the Padres by New York Post reporter Jon Heyman, is one of the most prolific power hitters in the game today.
Last season, Alonso turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension from the Mets, clearly betting on himself and the prospect of securing a larger payday. According to Heyman, one rival executive believes Alonso could command a deal closer to $185 million this offseason.
Since being drafted 64th overall in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Alonso has become a cornerstone of the Mets franchise. His 53 home runs as a rookie in 2019 not only shattered the single-season home run record for a rookie but also led the National League, earning him NL Rookie of the Year honors. His offensive prowess has only grown since, with Alonso pacing the league in RBIs in 2022.
Earlier this season, Alonso reached a significant milestone when he belted the 200th home run of his career. This feat puts him in elite company, as only three other Mets players—Darryl Strawberry, David Wright, and Mike Piazza—have achieved that mark.
In addition to his impressive regular-season numbers, Alonso has become a fan favorite thanks to his dominance in the Home Run Derby, where he has taken home the title twice (2019 and 2021).
A four-time NL All-Star (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024), Alonso is having another stellar campaign this year.
Leading the National League in games played (153), Alonso has posted a slash line of .246/.331/.476, smacking 34 home runs and driving in 87 RBIs. He ranks in the top 20 of the league in key offensive categories such as home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, OPS, and total bases.
While the Mets have struggled this season, currently clinging to the final NL Wild Card spot, Alonso remains a critical part of their lineup as both the team’s primary first baseman and their everyday cleanup hitter.
If New York hopes to retain their power-hitting star, they will likely need to meet his lofty contract demands. Still, the market for Alonso is expected to be competitive, with the Padres, Astros, Rangers, Mariners, Orioles, and Cubs all mentioned as potential suitors by Heyman.
For now, Alonso’s focus remains on helping the Mets secure a postseason berth. The team holds a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card race, but a tough upcoming schedule, including a series against the Philadelphia Phillies and a season-ending showdown with the Braves, threatens their chances.
A deep playoff run could not only bolster the Mets’ aspirations but also give Alonso a bigger stage to showcase his value before he hits free agency.
Whether the Mets can retain Alonso or whether another team swoops in with a lucrative offer remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Pete Alonso will be one of the most sought-after free agents this winter.
It will be interesting to see if the San Diego Padres end up making a move for Pete Alonso, or if they focus their offseason efforts elsewhere.
