Red Wings Make Trade for Intriguing 23-Year-Old Forward

The Detroit Red Wings acquired forward Sutter Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators on Thursday in a deal that brings a sizable college prospect into the organization for future considerations.

The 23-year-old Michigan native also signed a two-year entry-level contract with Detroit as part of the transaction. He is expected to compete for ice time either with the Red Wings or their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, during the 2026-27 season.

The move comes as the Red Wings navigate a quiet offseason. The franchise has yet to name a permanent general manager, leaving many roster decisions in limbo as the regular season approaches in less than seven weeks.

Aside from a modest free-agent signing and an earlier trade involving goaltender Sebastian Cossa, Detroit has remained largely inactive this summer. Fans have grown restless waiting for more substantial upgrades to a roster that finished outside the playoff picture last year.

Team officials confirmed the acquisition in a statement that read: “UPDATE: The Detroit #RedWings today acquired forward Sutter Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators in exchange for future considerations. Additionally, the Red Wings have signed Muzzatti to a two-year, entry-level contract.”

Muzzatti stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 240 pounds, giving him a physical presence that scouts have long admired. He spent the past several seasons at Notre Dame, where he developed into a reliable two-way contributor.

In his most recent college campaign, Muzzatti recorded 13 goals and 32 points in 37 games. Those numbers marked a career high and demonstrated the scoring touch the Red Wings hope he can eventually translate to the professional level.

Detroit’s prospect pipeline already features several highly regarded young players, including goaltender Trey Augustine, forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, center Nate Danielson and defenseman J.P. Hurlbert. Adding Muzzatti further deepens that group at a time when the franchise’s long-term direction remains unclear.

Whether the Red Wings pursue a full rebuild or attempt to remain competitive in the short term is still an open question. The delayed hiring of a new general manager has left those strategic choices unresolved as training camp draws closer.

For now, the addition of Muzzatti represents a low-risk move with potential upside. His size and production at the college level suggest he could at least provide depth for the Griffins while continuing to develop his game.

Predators management parted with the forward for future considerations, indicating Nashville viewed him as expendable in its own roster planning. Detroit, by contrast, saw an opportunity to add a big-bodied forward without surrendering significant assets.

Muzzatti’s path to regular NHL minutes is far from guaranteed. Many college standouts struggle with the jump in speed and physicality, and the Red Wings already have several forwards competing for limited spots on the big-league roster.

Still, his combination of height, strength and recent scoring output makes him an intriguing project. Coaches in Grand Rapids will likely give him every chance to prove he belongs in the professional ranks this fall.

The Red Wings organization continues to evaluate its options on multiple fronts. With the calendar ticking toward the start of the season, Thursday’s transaction at least provided a small piece of positive news for a fan base eager for movement.

How Muzzatti fits into the broader picture will depend heavily on the identity of the next general manager and the direction that person chooses for the franchise.

In the meantime, the 23-year-old will begin preparing for what could be the most important season of his young career.
