The Philadelphia Phillies received a significant setback on Thursday as they prepared to launch the second half of the 2026 campaign. The team announced the placement of right-handed reliever Brad Keller on the 15-day injured list, with the move made retroactive to Monday.

The diagnosis—a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow—delivers a harsh blow to a bullpen that had relied heavily on his presence.

Keller arrived in Philadelphia with high expectations after inking a two-year, $22 million deal during the offseason. His strong rebound in 2025 with the Chicago Cubs had turned heads, as he delivered a sparkling 2.07 earned run average over 68 appearances while striking out 75 batters. The Phillies viewed him as the ideal primary setup option for closer Jhoan Duran, and he stepped up effectively by recording saves during the periods when Duran dealt with an oblique issue.

This latest injury marks the end of Keller’s 2026 season. He had already battled through right elbow tendinitis earlier in the year, which sidelined him for nearly a month.

Upon his return on July 8 against the Cincinnati Reds, he delivered what would unfortunately prove to be his final outing of the campaign. In his time with Philadelphia this season, Keller made 32 appearances and posted a 4.02 ERA. He allowed 14 earned runs across 31 and one-third innings of work.

While those numbers reflected some regression from his dominant 2025 showing, his experience and ability to handle high-leverage situations had still provided value to the club.

The torn UCL represents a season-ending injury for the veteran right-hander. Should he choose to undergo surgery, the typical recovery timeline spans 12 to 14 months. That timetable would cause him to miss a substantial portion of the 2027 season, forcing both Keller and the Phillies to navigate a lengthy rehabilitation process.

To address the immediate roster need, the Phillies recalled right-hander Seth Johnson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The move adds another arm to the big-league bullpen as the team pushes forward without one of its key late-inning pieces.

Johnson brings an intriguing background to the Phillies organization. Selected in the first round of the 2019 draft, he originally played shortstop before transitioning to pitching during his time at Campbell University. The conversion has shown promise, though his path has involved steady development across multiple levels.

Since the Phillies acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, Johnson has gained valuable experience by shifting between starting and relief roles. This versatility could prove useful as Philadelphia looks to plug the gap left by Keller’s absence.

The loss of Keller arrives at a critical juncture for the Phillies. With the second half underway, their bullpen depth will face increased scrutiny as they strive to maintain their position in the competitive National League playoff race. The group will need to step up collectively to cover the innings and high-leverage situations that Keller had been handling.

As the team adjusts to life without its veteran setup man, all eyes will be on how the revamped relief corps performs.

Philadelphia’s ability to weather this injury and keep their postseason hopes alive may hinge on contributions from emerging arms like Johnson and the rest of the bullpen.
