Penn State’s Kalen DeBoer Rumors Receive Big Update

The quest for a new head coach at Penn State remains unresolved months after the abrupt firing of veteran leader James Franklin, leaving the storied Nittany Lions program in a state of flux.

Franklin, who spent over a decade at the helm in Happy Valley, has quickly pivoted to a fresh opportunity, signing on to guide the Virginia Tech Hokies in the ACC. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions are navigating the 2025 campaign with interim head coach Terry Smith calling the shots from the sidelines, as the athletic department weighs its options for a long-term successor.

Speculation about potential hires ramped up earlier this month when local Penn State beat writer Jon Sauber, writing for the Centre Daily Times, identified Alabama Crimson Tide lead man Kalen DeBoer as the top choice in the university’s ongoing hunt for new leadership. The report fueled buzz among fans and analysts, painting DeBoer as a prime candidate to revitalize the program.

However, that narrative took a sharp turn on Monday when prominent ESPN college football commentator Paul Finebaum publicly dismantled the claims, casting serious doubt on the reliability of Sauber’s scoop.

Finebaum, known for his unfiltered takes on the SEC and beyond, used his platform to critique the broader landscape of sports media.

“I know this would be a good time for me to get on a soapbox and give a manifesto on the absolute pathetic state of sports reporting and journalism, but I think that’s already been done. But it just doesn’t take anything nowadays,” Finebaum said.

He elaborated on the ease with which unverified chatter spreads in today’s information-saturated environment, pointing to a breakdown in rigorous verification processes.

“It just takes hearing something somewhere. You can’t even blame message boards anymore, because I haven’t seen one so long, I don’t really know what they look like. But, it’s just somebody putting something out, and then somebody asking you guys a question or me, and then somebody reporting it as, ‘Oh, Kalen DeBoer’s leaving.’ … I have never heard one ounce of concrete information that indicates Kalen DeBoer is going anywhere.”

Finebaum’s rebuke underscores the challenges facing coaching searches in the high-stakes world of college athletics, where rumors can ignite hiring frenzies even absent solid evidence. For Penn State, the dismissal of Franklin earlier this season—amid mounting pressure over postseason shortcomings—has amplified the urgency to secure a marquee name capable of restoring championship contention.

DeBoer, meanwhile, appears firmly entrenched in Tuscaloosa. Now in his sophomore year steering the Crimson Tide after succeeding the iconic Nick Saban ahead of the 2024 slate, the former Washington standout has the program humming at 9-2.

Alabama enters this weekend’s marquee Iron Bowl clash with the arch rival Auburn Tigers riding high, positioning DeBoer as a stabilizing force in the wake of Saban’s retirement.

As Penn State brass continues its discreet vetting process, Finebaum’s comments serve as a cautionary note: In an era of rapid-fire speculation, separating fact from fiction will be key to landing the right fit. For Nittany Lions supporters, the wait for clarity—and perhaps a splashy announcement—presses on.
