The Green Bay Packers have taken a significant step in bolstering their defensive interior by agreeing to a three-year, $57 million contract extension with defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt. The deal, which includes a substantial $20 million signing bonus, keeps the 28-year-old Georgia product in Green and Gold through the 2029 season. This move comes at a pivotal moment for both player and team, as Wyatt enters what could have been a critical contract year following a season marred by injury.

Wyatt, selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has shown promising flashes of the disruptive potential that made him a standout college player.

His combination of size, quickness off the snap, and power has allowed him to generate pressure from the inside, contributing to a career total of 16 sacks over four seasons. In 2023, he enjoyed his most productive campaign to date, recording 5.5 sacks and consistent quarterback hits while carving out a larger role in the rotation.

However, Ethen Hutton of Athlon Sports wonders if extending Wyatt on such a lucrative deal was the right move for the Packers.

Durability has been a recurring theme in Wyatt’s young NFL career. He has battled various ailments that limited his availability in recent years. Most notably, his 2025 season ended prematurely on Thanksgiving when he suffered a fractured fibula and torn ankle ligaments during a victory over the Detroit Lions.

The injury required him to be carted off the field and sidelined him for the remainder of the year after he had already missed time earlier in the campaign with a knee issue. Despite playing in just 10 games, Wyatt still managed four sacks and showed why he had earned a starting role.

Prior seasons also featured injury interruptions. Wyatt missed games in 2024 and dealt with setbacks that kept his snap count lower than ideal for a player of his caliber. These concerns have fueled discussions about his long-term reliability, especially as he approaches his late 20s.

Yet the Packers, under general manager Brian Gutekunst, have expressed confidence in Wyatt’s upside. They exercised his fifth-year option previously and proceeded with this extension despite the recent health challenges, betting that he can return stronger and more consistent.

For Wyatt personally, the new contract represents validation and motivation. After the tough end to his previous season, he spoke optimistically about his future, noting that he feels he has “a lot more in the tank” and that the recovery period could help him elevate his game further. Teammates and coaches have echoed this sentiment, highlighting the void left by his absence and the difficulty in replacing his interior presence.

The extension also fits into the Packers’ broader strategy of locking in key contributors on both sides of the ball. With recent deals for players like Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Isaiah McDuffie, Green Bay is building continuity around quarterback Jordan Love while addressing defensive needs. Adding Wyatt long-term provides stability up front, particularly as the team integrates other pieces like veteran Javon Hargrave.

Looking ahead, much will depend on Wyatt’s ability to stay healthy and translate his physical tools into sustained production. If he can avoid the injury bug and increase his workload effectively, this deal could prove to be a savvy investment for a Packers defense aiming to contend in the NFC. At the same time, the organization will monitor his progress closely during rehabilitation and training camp, hoping the best is yet to come for the talented defensive lineman.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching to see if Wyatt can silence questions about his durability and emerge as a cornerstone of Green Bay’s front seven for years to come.
