Two days after shipping Kyle McCord to Miami, the Green Bay Packers filled the developmental quarterback vacancy by signing Kedon Slovis to the practice squad.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said finding a new third quarterback was part of the job after he dealt McCord to the Dolphins for a 2028 sixth-round pick.

Green Bay kept Jordan Love and veteran Tyrod Taylor on the 53-man roster and elected not to carry a third passer into the regular season. Gutekunst had hoped McCord might clear waivers and land on the practice squad, but a call from former Packers executive Jon-Eric Sullivan — now Miami’s general manager — changed the plan.

McCord earned the interest. The former Syracuse star and 2025 sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles signed a reserve/future deal with Green Bay in January and won the No. 3 job in camp.

In three preseason games ,he completed 46 of 70 passes for 446 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He played the entire finale against Arizona and led a 42-38 comeback. In Miami he will back up former Packer Malik Willis.

Slovis arrives from that same Cardinals roster. He completed 63.9 percent of his preseason throws for 434 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, including 21-of-35 for 223 yards, a score and two picks in Friday’s game against Green Bay.

The Packers signed him in time for Tuesday’s practice. Gutekunst framed him as a practice-squad candidate who can grow into a backup role.

The 24-year-old’s calling card is still his freshman year at USC. In 2019 Slovis completed 282 of 392 passes (71.9 percent) for 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions. That completion rate was an NCAA freshman record at the time (minimum 200 attempts), a Pac-12 season mark and a USC record.

He was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Later stops at Pittsburgh and BYU were less spectacular; he went undrafted in 2024 and has since spent time with the Colts, Texans and Cardinals.

For Green Bay the move is continuity more than splash. Love remains the starter and Taylor the proven backup.

Slovis gives the Packers another arm in meetings and on the scout team after they turned a strong McCord summer into a future draft pick.

Whether the former Trojan develops into more than a practice-squad name will be decided on the practice field, not in the record book.
