The Oklahoma City Thunder may very well be the most talented team in the Western Conference heading into the NBA season, and young wing Jalen Williams is a big reason why.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a very impressive sophomore campaign last year, playing in 71 games and averaging 19.1 points, 4.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals over 31.3 minutes per game on 54.0/42.7/81.4 shooting splits.
Now, Bleacher Report’s Joe Tansey is predicting Williams to be one of the top breakout stars in the league this year, particularly from a Fantasy Basketball perspective.
“With Josh Giddey now in Chicago, Williams is the clear No. 3 scoring option inside the Thunder offense, and he may be the top or second-best scorer in certain matchups,” Tansey wrote.
Tansey also praised Williams’ versatility, which is obviously key in fantasy.
Williams, who played his collegiate basketball at Santa Clara, was selected by the Thunder with the 12th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft.
He produced a solid rookie year, appearing in 75 contests and registering 14.1 points, 4.5 boards, 3.3 steals and 1.4 steals across 30.3 minutes a night while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor, 35.6 percent from three-point range and 81.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Williams is part of an Oklahoma City roster that also includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, so he is not going to be the club’s top scorer. However, he can certainly entrench himself as part of a dynamic trio in OKC, which he already seems to be doing.
The Thunder finished with the No. 1 seed in the West last year before being eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the playoffs. We’ll see if Williams can help them advance further this coming season.
