Nicolas Cage Breaks Silence on Longstanding Name Change Mystery

Nicolas Cage, the acclaimed performer known for his intense screen presence and eclectic roles, has long embraced a persona that stands apart from his Hollywood lineage. Born Nicolas Coppola, he belongs to the renowned Coppola family, which includes his uncle Francis Ford Coppola and cousin Sofia Coppola.

Despite these deep connections, the actor adopted his stage name early in his career, using it since his breakout in the 1983 film Valley Girl.

In a recent conversation with Variety, Cage revealed that he took a decisive step in solidifying his independent identity. He legally changed his last name from Coppola to Cage in 2025, marking a formal commitment to the moniker he had used professionally for decades. This alteration reflects a deliberate effort to carve out his own path beyond the shadow of his family’s legacy.

The choice of Cage draws from multiple cultural influences that resonated with the actor over the years. He found inspiration in the Marvel superhero Luke Cage as well as the innovative composer John Cage. By making the switch, he aimed to establish a personal brand unlinked to the Coppola name, allowing him greater freedom in how the public perceives him.

When the interviewer inquired if it felt unusual to continue being recognized as Nicolas Cage, the actor responded confidently.

“No. I am Nick Cage. I changed my name legally last year. I’m Nick Cage in life, and I’m Nick Cage on camera,” he said.

He elaborated on the deeper motivations behind embracing this new chapter.

“‘Tis better to be the patriarch of my own little family than the clown cousin on the margins of someone else’s, so I decided I’m going to bring it on and be ‘Cage,’” he explained. “‘Cage’ is a name that I liked coming across in the comics — I just thought he had a cool name — and I grew up in a very avant-garde, artsy family and there was talk about John Cage and the experimental compositions that he did.”

Cage expressed a preference for a concise, memorable surname reminiscent of iconic figures like James Dean. He decided to retain his first name despite some personal quirks associated with it.

“I thought, well, I’ll keep the name ‘Nicolas’ because my father named me Nicolas — with French spelling, which has always frustrated me, because everyone adds an ‘h,’” Cage said. “I don’t know why he gave me the French spelling! But he did.”

The discussion highlighted how naturally the full name aligns with heroic archetypes. When the reporter noted that “Nick Cage” evokes a superhero vibe, the actor reflected playfully on the idea.

“I think so. You think I should’ve shaved it off and just made it ‘Nick?’ I’m both! I think people know me as both.”

Today, Cage immerses himself in a fresh project that showcases his versatility. He portrays Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider, in the series Spider-Noir. This Prime Video and MGM+ production reimagines a Spider-Man variant operating as a private investigator amid the gritty streets of 1930s New York City.

This marks a significant milestone for the actor, representing his first substantial television commitment. Apart from a 1981 pilot and occasional self-portrayals, Cage had largely steered clear of the small screen until now. His hesitation stemmed from concerns about artistic constraints, but perspectives shifted thanks to family influence and input from colleagues.

Cage described his initial resistance to TV projects.

“I was adamant about not doing television, because I didn’t want to do anything that was too homogenized or that was like everybody else,” he said to Variety. “And my son sat me down during COVID, and he showed me Breaking Bad. I began to see that the actors in that show were afforded the luxury of time to tell their story.”

He found the right opportunity in Spider-Noir, where the creative vision aligned perfectly with his expectations.

“That was the main attraction. I waited for something that I thought would be special, and I can tell you that with Spider-Noir, the vision that I had in my imagination manifested in the exact way that I’d hoped,” he continued, calling the experience “scary” and “risky.”

Nerves surfaced particularly during preparations, prompting Cage to seek guidance from a seasoned television veteran. He reached out to his friend Charlie Sheen, drawing on Sheen’s extensive sitcom experience in shows like Spin City and Two and a Half Men. A producer’s warning about mumbling during a read-through amplified his anxiety, leading to a memorable exchange.

Cage recounted the conversation with humor.

“I was very nervous to do television, I’ll tell ya. One of the producers said, ‘We’re going to do this read-through because we haven’t hit yet with Amazon, and you gotta make sure that during the read-through you don’t mumble,’” he said. “I was so nervous that I called my good friend Charlie Sheen, who’s done a lot of television, and asked him for advice.”

“He said, ‘Well, that’s the hardest part, Nick — the read-through. So, what is it that you’re nervous about?’ And I said, ‘One of the producers said, ‘Don’t mumble,’” Cage continued. “He said, ‘I’m sorry… who told you not to mumble? Is his last name ‘Sony?’’ And I said, ‘No.’ And he said, ‘Well, tell him to f–k off!’ So, I had a big laugh, went in, and did the read-through.”

With Season 1 of Spider-Noir now fully available for streaming, audiences can witness Cage’s bold transition into television on his own terms. The project not only fulfills a long-held artistic curiosity but also underscores his evolution as an artist who continues to redefine his boundaries.
