The New York Jets are set to move on from veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason, marking a significant shift in their roster strategy. The decision was communicated to Rodgers during a February 6 meeting with the team’s new coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey at the Jets’ facility in New Jersey.

Rodgers, who flew in for the meeting, was informed that the team intends to release him after the new league year begins on March 12. The announcement ends Rodgers’ brief tenure with the Jets, which was marred by injuries but also showcased his resilience.

Despite the widespread speculation about his future, including potential retirement, Rodgers indicated in the meeting that he plans to continue playing, as Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported.

“These things can change, of course, but Rodgers gave the Jets the impression that he had unfinished business to take care of,” Breer wrote.

Rodgers’ time with the Jets was a rollercoaster. After being traded from Green Bay, he played just four snaps in the 2023 season before a torn Achilles tendon sidelined him for the remainder. He returned fully healthy this past season, starting all 17 games. While he didn’t reach his four-time MVP heights, Rodgers showed flashes of his old self, especially towards the end of the season. Over the last five games, he completed 64% of his passes, throwing for 1,270 yards and nine touchdowns against three interceptions.

The season had its ups and downs, with Rodgers throwing 10 touchdowns to seven interceptions in the first seven games, leading the team to a 2-5 start. However, his performance in the latter part of the season reaffirmed his capability to contribute significantly.

Several teams are reportedly interested in Rodgers should he become available. As Rodgers prepares for the next chapter of his career, the NFL community will be keenly watching where the veteran quarterback will take his talents as he continues pursuing a second Super Bowl title.

The Jets, on the other hand, will be looking to rebuild and possibly focus on developing younger talents under the leadership of their new coach and general manager.
