The New York Yankees and their entire fan base held their collective breath earlier this week. Superstar right fielder Juan Soto was removed from their game against the Minnesota Twins with an injury.
Details on why he was removed were scarce, but information began trickling in that he was dealing with forearm soreness. It is something that sent New York Yankees fans into a tizzy, as a lot of the descriptors and information being shared was similar to top prospect Jasson Dominguez.
Dominguez ended up needing Tommy John surgery, as he is nearing a return to the big league team. That would have been a worst-case scenario for the team, as Juan Soto is having an MVP-caliber season along with Aaron Judge,
Luckily, it seems as if he avoided any serious injury like that. On Friday, testing of his left forearm and elbow revealed only inflammation, no structural damage. That is about as good of results as the New York Yankees and Juan Soto could have hoped for, as he is being listed as day-to-day.
He did sit out Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a 2-1 loss in extra innings. There is a chance that Soto can get back in the lineup this weekend, but the team is going to be extremely cautious with their star.
“It was what I was looking for,” Soto said. “Just trying to see what was really going on in my elbow, and we were having a little bit of thinking of what it was going to be like and how it was going to come out. And thank God it came out our way.”
Juan Soto did look like he was going to be deployed as a pinch hitter late in the game, as he was on the top step with batting gloves on. That opportunity never came, as he didn’t enter the game to swing.
It will be interesting to see if Juan Soto is in the lineup on Saturday or Sunday in a superstar-laden series against the Dodgers. The New York Yankees could use him as a designated hitter upon his return, something he hasn’t done yet this season.
