New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton has yet to take the field this season as he deals with injuries to both elbows, and while there was some speculation last month that he would need surgery, he has resorted to other methods to recover.
Stanton has been receiving platelet-rich plasma injections in order to speed up his rehab and diminish the pain, and he is already making shocking progress.
The 35-year-old is hitting in the batting cage and is also taking at bats against the Trajekt machine, but he will still need to play in some rehab games before a return to the Yankees is on the table.
Regardless, it’s great news that Stanton is on track to get back on the field, as the outlook for the reigning ALCS MVP looked incredibly bleak a couple of weeks ago.
However, even when the designated hitter returns, he apparently won’t be 100 percent, and not just for 2025: his elbows may never be back to normal again, at least during his playing career.
While speaking to reporters this week, Stanton revealed that he will likely always be in pain from the elbow issues that began plaguing him last season.
“That will be a constant,” Stanton said, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Stanton slashed .233/.298/.475 with 27 home runs and 72 RBI over 459 plate appearances last season, but where he really made his money was in the playoffs, where he racked up seven homers and 16 RBI across 62 trips to the dish. Mashing in the postseason is nothing new for the former NL MVP, as he has smashed 18 long balls in 41 career playoff games.
The Yankees initially acquired Stanton in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins in November 2017, and much of his tenure in New York has been marred by injuries.
When he has been healthy, Stanton has delivered, but staying on the field has been a trying exercise for the five-time All-Star.
There is still no definitive timetable for Stanton’s return this season.
