The New York Jets own the seventh overall pick in the NFL Draft, and there will be a plethora of options on the table for them. Heck, that could even include Shedeur Sanders.
However, there is one intriguing name who appears to be generating some buzz for the Jets: Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty.
New York’s depth chart at halfback is actually pretty crowded, with Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis all occupying roster spots. But could the Jets be looking to make a trade at the position?
ESPN’s Rich Cimini notes the possibility, naming Hall a potential trade candidate for New York. If that occurs, the Jets could then select Jeanty at No. 7 to lead the backfield.
“Hall is a gifted player who would attract interest if dangled in trade talks,” Cimini wrote. “Perhaps the Jets would consider moving him if Boise State star Ashton Jeanty is available with the seventh pick in the April 24 draft.”
The question is whether or not it would be worth selecting a running back so high in the NFL Draft when the Jets have so many other pressing needs.
For example, Penn State Nittany Lions tight end Tyler Warren—a generational talent—could very well be available when Gang Green is on the clock. As a matter of fact, it would be fairly surprising if he weren’t on the board by the time the Jets are ready to make their pick.
Not only that, but if Sanders is still remaining, is New York really that confident in Justin Fields moving forward to not pull the trigger on the Colorado Buffaloes star? Sanders’ draft stock has been slipping, but given how long the Jets have been searching for a franchise quarterback (it has literally been decades), passing on the talented signal-caller could ultimately become infinitely regrettable for the squad.
Jeanty is clearly the best halfback in this class and could very well become one of the most explosive weapons in the league, but it’s generally never wise to use such a lofty draft pick on a running back.
