The Minnesota Vikings definitely made some significant pickups in free agency and were also able to retain cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., so it has certainly been an active offseason for the Vikings thus far.
However, Minnesota is playing in a loaded NFC North (and crowded conference in general) and still needs to hit in the NFL Draft to bolster its roster for 2025.
The Vikings currently own the 24th pick later this month, and while there will definitely be some big-time names available for them at that spot, they may want to consider trading down to accumulate as many draft assets as possible.
Well, Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus has put together a very intriguing trade proposal for Minnesota, suggesting that the Vikings trade No. 24 to the Philadelphia Eagles for pick Nos. 32, 96 and 161.
Then, Cameron thinks that Minnesota should take the 32nd overall pick that it acquires from the Eagles and send it to the Tennessee Titans for selection Nos. 35 and 120.
“The first move on this list is almost necessary; Minnesota needs to trade back and gather more assets,” Cameron wrote. “The team holds just two selections within the first 100 picks (Nos. 24 and 97) and carries four picks in total. Although the Vikings were active in free agency, their developmental depth is a bit lacking, which will be the driving force behind this move. Situated at the No. 24 pick, the Vikings could maneuver down twice — once into the backend of the first round with a team eyeing key defensive help and again with a team looking to take advantage of the fifth-year option awarded to first-round selections.”
Right now, the Vikings own a grand total of four draft choices. They don’t own a single second-round draft pick nor a fourth-rounder, so it would definitely make sense for Minnesota to acquire some more draft capital in order to best fill out its roster.
The Vikings won 14 games this past year but ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. They also lost Sam Darnold to free agency and appear prepared to depend on J.J. McCarthy at quarterback, so it’s certainly imperative for Minnesota to supply McCarthy with as much supporting talent as possible.
Considering how few draft picks the Vikings currently have, moving down could be inevitable for Kevin O’Connell’s club.
