Mike Vrabel is ready to lead the New England Patriots into a new chapter, and he’s setting the tone for his working relationship with personnel chief Eliot Wolf as the franchise looks to regain its former glory ahead of the next NFL season in 2025.

When the Patriots parted ways with Jerod Mayo after just one season, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Vrabel, a former Patriots star and current Tennessee Titans coach, would take over.

However, some wondered how Vrabel’s past strained relationship with former Titans general manager Jon Robinson—especially over the controversial trade of wide receiver A.J. Brown—might affect his dynamic with Wolf, the de facto GM in New England.

Despite speculation that Wolf’s future in New England could be uncertain, Vrabel dispelled any doubts during an appearance on WEEI, stating he was “beyond comfortable” with Wolf.

“Absolutely,” Vrabel said when asked if he would be comfortable working with Wolf. “I wouldn’t be here, and I think through the conversations and the interview process, and the conversations with Eliot and with [Patriots owner] Robert (Kraft) and with Jonathan (Kraft), and just trying to put a roster together and a program.”

Vrabel emphasized the importance of building a strong, unified program that players and staff can be proud of.

“To me, that’s the biggest thing, I want to try to put a program around our coaches, our support staff, our personnel department, our players most especially, that people want to be a part of, that they’re proud of,” he said.

With Vrabel now officially in charge, he’s committed to restoring consistency to a Patriots team that struggled under Mayo’s leadership. While the results may not come immediately, Vrabel is focused on building a stable, dependable foundation, regardless of the initial challenges. His vision for the team centers on a solid, consistent program that fosters long-term success.

Addressing questions about the offense, Vrabel pointed to his previous experience in Tennessee, where he built his offense around running back Derrick Henry.

“Our best player was our running back,” Vrabel explained. “So we tried to structure the offense, build the offense around what we felt like was our best player and what was our strength. When we did have pieces around Derrick (Henry) that we felt comfortable with, we threw it just as successfully as we ran it.”

Vrabel acknowledged the importance of building his offense around the strengths of his current roster, including rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who showed promise despite a lackluster supporting cast in his first season. While Vrabel believes Maye has a bright future, he emphasized that the goal is to remain “efficient and explosive.”

Looking ahead, Vrabel still has key decisions to make regarding his coaching staff, including the all-important offensive coordinator role. While many expect Vrabel to consider former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for the position, he remained non-committal, focusing instead on building the best possible program.

“We’re going to start that process today, this afternoon, and visit with some great coaches and then we’ll see where things go,” Vrabel said.

Vrabel’s success in Tennessee demonstrated his ability to build a winning team, and now he’s tasked with doing the same in New England. His journey to restore the Patriots’ championship aspirations begins with assembling the right staff and building a foundation for sustained success.

As the Patriots embark on this new era under Vrabel, the head coach is confident that he and Wolf will work hand in hand to turn the team back into an elite contender. The quest to return to prominence starts now.
