A peaceful fishing outing in the remote woods of Maine took an unexpected turn for Todd and Elvia Malcolm when they witnessed a tense chase between a black bear and a young moose calf.
What started as an opportunity to snap a photo of a moose quickly became a heart-pounding moment that required quick thinking and intervention.
The couple had headed out to Telos Township in Maine, hoping for a relaxing day by the water. As they drove along, they spotted an adult female moose lingering near the tree line.
Excited at the chance for a wildlife photograph, Todd encouraged his wife to get her phone ready. “Grab your phone—you’re going to get a picture of a moose,” he told her.
The mother moose seemed uneasy, pacing along the edge of the road and making repeated grunting sounds, as if calling out. Moments later, a frightened moose calf burst from the woods, closely pursued by a large black bear. The calf was running directly toward the couple’s parked truck in a desperate bid to escape its predator.
Todd realized the bear was likely to catch the young moose if he didn’t act. In an instant, he shifted the truck into drive and positioned it between the two animals—not to strike the bear, but to startle it and disrupt the pursuit.
The bold move succeeded: the bear veered off and retreated into the forest, allowing the calf precious seconds to break free.
“I knew what I had to do and I just did it,” Todd later recounted.
For Elvia, those few seconds felt eternal. Her heart raced at the thought of seeing the calf caught. She watched as the young moose dashed past their vehicle and eventually reunited with its mother farther down the road. The relief was immediate for the couple.
Only after the adrenaline subsided did Elvia review the photos she had taken from inside the truck. At first glance, she mistook the blurry figures for insects on the windshield. Instead, she had unintentionally captured striking images of the high-speed chase unfolding right in front of them.
With the moose pair safely reunited, Todd and Elvia continued on to their intended fishing spot. The day ended successfully with them catching brook trout—though the real story of the trip was the remarkable wildlife encounter they had witnessed and helped resolve.
