The NCAA’s primary transfer portal period for college football is scheduled to begin on January 2 and continue until January 16. Although the official window has not yet opened, numerous athletes nationwide have already signaled their plans to explore new opportunities, particularly after the wrap-up of the regular season and conference title games.

A team drawing significant attention during this offseason is LSU, now under the direction of head coach Lane Kiffin, who is recognized across the sport for his exceptional abilities in recruiting and overall coaching prowess.

Transitions to a new coaching staff frequently lead to changes in team composition, and Kiffin is anticipated to navigate considerable adjustments in the coming days before the portal activates, as he aims to attract premier players to strengthen the squad for the upcoming campaign in Baton Rouge.

This past Wednesday marked a key development when LSU saw the departure of a prominent signal-caller who had initially been brought in by the previous head coach, Brian Kelly. Highly-rated prospect Colin Hurley revealed his decision to seek a transfer, apparently acknowledging the challenging path ahead in vying for the primary role in 2026 amid anticipated pursuits by Kiffin of additional quarterbacks.

Hurley retains four seasons of eligibility at the college level. Following his exit, Michael Van Buren stands as the sole quarterback holding a scholarship on the Tigers’ current roster, having assumed starting responsibilities toward the end of the year after Garrett Nussmeier suffered an injury.

A potential addition via the portal for LSU might involve Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who performed exceptionally this year while playing for Kiffin. That said, Chambliss would require approval from the NCAA for an extra season of eligibility, a scenario that appears feasible considering his college journey started at the Division II level with Ferris State.

LSU will have the chance to assess various other quarterbacks who become available, with additional names expected to surface in the period approaching January 2.

This pool features Chambliss from Ole Miss, a factor that probably contributes to his lack of any public statements regarding a portal entry so far. The Rebels are preparing to face the Tulane Green Wave this Saturday in Oxford, representing their initial contest since Kiffin’s departure from the head coaching position.

As the portal era continues to reshape rosters, programs like LSU are poised for active involvement to address immediate needs, especially at critical positions such as quarterback.

Kiffin’s track record of success in utilizing transfers suggests the Tigers could emerge stronger, blending incoming talent with existing players to build momentum for the next season.
