The Los Angeles Clippers are navigating uncertain waters as they aim to keep their star duo, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, intact.
Despite not being front-runners for an NBA championship, the pairing of these future Hall of Famers remains the Clippers’ best shot at remaining competitive.
However, the situation might take a turn for the worse. Paul George has a player option for the upcoming season, and it’s widely anticipated that he will decline it to explore free agency.
Recent reports suggest that the Philadelphia 76ers are confident in their chances of signing George in free agency. If this comes to pass, the Clippers will find themselves in a challenging position. They will need to secure another star to pair with Leonard, particularly if James Harden also leaves in free agency.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, DeMar DeRozan could emerge as a viable target for the Clippers through a sign-and-trade deal with the Chicago Bulls.
To facilitate a sign-and-trade, a team must remain below the NBA’s first salary tax apron. This would be feasible for Los Angeles with George’s max contract no longer on the books.
DeRozan, though not a direct replacement for George, would still be a valuable addition. Last season, the 34-year-old averaged 24.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 48% from the field, maintaining his status as one of the top-scoring wings in the league.
The critical question is what the Clippers can offer the Bulls to make a sign-and-trade for DeRozan attractive. Without any future first-round picks to trade, their bargaining power is significantly weakened, complicating potential negotiations.
As the offseason progresses, the Los Angeles Clippers’ front office faces the daunting task of reshaping the team’s future, contingent on the decisions of their current and potential stars.
