The Florida Gators football team finds itself in the midst of a significant leadership transition after parting ways with head coach Billy Napier earlier this year.

As the search intensifies, the Gators’ athletic department has set its sights primarily on Lane Kiffin, the current head coach at Ole Miss, though obstacles could push them toward alternative choices if Kiffin decides to remain in his current role or pursue an opportunity with another Southeastern Conference powerhouse like the LSU Tigers.

The urgency of the hiring process came into sharper focus following a decisive defeat at home against the Tennessee Volunteers last Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

In the midst of the game’s coverage, ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit suggested USC’s Lincoln Riley as a potential backup plan for Gainesville should Kiffin opt for a different path.

“Everybody’s talking about Lane [Kiffin],” Herbstreit said. “What if Lane Kiffin stays at Ole Miss or goes to LSU? I’ve been asking everybody, ‘What if you don’t get Lane Kiffin? Who’s next?’ Lincoln Riley… I’ve heard his name.”

Following USC’s workout session on Tuesday night, Riley addressed the swirling speculation about his future directly when questioned about his commitment to the Trojans amid the coaching carousel buzz. Florida Gators fans won’t love what he had to say.

“Oh yeah, 100 percent. Like I said before, I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” Riley said to the Los Angeles Times. “I think nothing other than what we’re building… I love being here.”

Riley inked what reports describe as a decade-long, $110 million agreement with USC ahead of the 2022 campaign. In his time leading the program since departing Oklahoma, the ex-Sooners skipper has guided the Trojans to a 34-17 mark overall.

Entering the final week of the regular season, USC sits at 8-3 after dropping a 42-27 decision to the Oregon Ducks over the weekend.

The Trojans currently occupy the No. 17 spot in the College Football Playoff standings as they prepare to face off against rivals UCLA Bruins this Saturday.
