Luka Dončić enters the 2026-27 NBA season as the undisputed centerpiece of the Los Angeles Lakers, a franchise that has reshaped itself entirely around his talents.

After ushering out LeBron James and committing significant resources to construct a supporting cast designed specifically for him, the Lakers have placed enormous faith in their Slovenian superstar. That faith brings with it a corresponding weight of expectation that few players in the league currently carry.

Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes feels that Dončić remains the player with the most to prove on a Lakers roster that also includes newly contracted talents like Walker Kessler and Austin Reaves.

Hughes notes that while the numbers will almost certainly arrive—Dončić stands as a strong candidate to lead the league in scoring and free-throw attempts once again—the real questions extend beyond statistical dominance. The offense should flow with brilliance whenever he holds the ball, yet durability and postseason delivery remain unresolved chapters in his career narrative.

Those questions center on physical consistency. Throughout nearly every season of his eight-year career, injuries have gradually worn Dončić down, preventing him from completing a full regular-season and playoff run without interruption.

Arriving in peak condition and sustaining that availability through the grind of an 82-game schedule plus the postseason would represent a significant milestone.

In a Western Conference already fortified by the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, that availability could prove decisive when the intensity rises and every possession carries heavier consequences.

Beyond health, the individual hardware that has long eluded him adds another layer. Most observers assumed an MVP award would have materialized by now given the sustained excellence he has displayed since entering the league.

The absence of that recognition, paired with the lack of a championship, creates a quiet pressure that stems directly from his own elite standard.

The Lakers’ decision to reorient the entire franchise around him, including the substantial trade package surrendered to acquire Kessler, reflects the belief that Dončić can still reach those missing peaks.

The coming season therefore functions as both validation and opportunity. If Dončić maintains his customary brilliance while finally clearing the durability and hardware hurdles that have lingered, the Lakers’ ambitious rebuild will appear justified.

Should those challenges persist, the same expectations that the organization and the player himself have cultivated will invite sharper scrutiny.

For a talent of his caliber, the path forward remains clear: continue producing at an elite level while answering the lingering questions that only sustained health and postseason success can resolve.
