Kirk Cousins is looking for a new team after a challenging season with the Atlanta Falcons. He has requested a meeting with team owner Arthur Blank to discuss his future.

Despite his desires, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the Falcons are not planning to release the veteran quarterback.

Early in a four-year, $180 million contract, Cousins faced a significant career pivot when he was benched in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. last December.

Cousins was surprised by the shift to Penix, who took over for the final three games of the 2024 season and showed promising potential. This move has solidified Penix as the starter into 2025, as confirmed by Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot at the NFL scouting combine.

This decision puts Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, in a precarious position as he contemplates his future in the NFL at 36.

Cousins’ contract includes a $10 million roster bonus due March 17 and a $27.5 million base salary for 2025. If Atlanta decides to cut Cousins, it faces a $40 million dead cap hit, a substantial financial burden that complicates any decisions regarding his release.

Despite a drop in performance, Cousins’ last season stats show he still has competitive fire: 3,508 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions across 14 games, ending with an 88.6 passer rating.

The Falcons now face a significant decision—whether to keep Cousins as an expensive backup or take the financial hit of releasing him.

Cousins’ experience and previous high-level play could make him a viable starter for other NFL teams looking for stability and leadership at the quarterback position.

As the situation unfolds, Cousins hopes for a resolution that allows him another chance to prove his worth as an NFL starter, while the Falcons must weigh their financial commitments against their strategic goals for the coming seasons.
