Brendan Sorsby, the former Texas Tech quarterback, has endured what ranks among the most chaotic offseasons experienced by any player eyeing an NFL opportunity in recent memory. His path forward now leads to the NFL’s supplemental draft, a rare event that could reshape his professional future in unexpected ways.

The drama unfolded when reports surfaced about Sorsby’s involvement in gambling activities. Those revelations prompted the NCAA to strip him of eligibility for the upcoming 2026 college season. In response, a legal challenge was mounted to restore his ability to suit up for the Red Raiders one final time. Sorsby emerged victorious in that court battle, yet he ultimately elected to pursue entry into the supplemental draft instead of returning to campus.

This sequence of events leaves NFL teams weighing whether to invest in a talented but controversy-laden prospect. The central uncertainty revolves around which franchise will step up and bid on Sorsby, particularly those organizations facing pressing needs at the quarterback position.

The New York Jets represent one squad that clearly qualifies as quarterback-hungry. However, indications suggest they may steer clear of the supplemental draft process when it comes to this particular player.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported that the Jets appear hesitant to pursue Sorsby despite their ongoing search for a long-term solution under center.

“One person close to the situation doubted the Jets’ interest, suggesting ‘they don’t want to deal with it,'” Cimini wrote.

Several factors appear to be driving this reluctance, with Sorsby’s off-field issues standing out as the primary obstacle. Any team that selects him could confront immediate complications related to league rules and public perception.

“Sorsby could face an immediate suspension under the NFL’s personal conduct policy; the prospect of discipline could be a deal-breaker for some teams. The team that picks him also might have to deal with a public relations fallout. Teams sometimes are willing to overlook off-the-field issues — ‘talent trumps character,’ the saying goes — but gambling is different because it’s perceived as taboo by the NFL.”

The NFL environment treats gambling infractions with far greater severity than college football does at present, according to legal precedents and league policies. This heightened scrutiny could discourage multiple franchises from committing significant draft capital to Sorsby, regardless of his on-field abilities.

Talent evaluators across the league have nonetheless praised Sorsby’s potential, with some projecting him as worthy of first-round consideration in a traditional draft. ESPN’s Jordan Rogers went further, asserting that the 22-year-old possesses greater long-term upside compared to prospects such as Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson.

For the Jets specifically, the decision calculus appears straightforward given their asset position. Holding three first-round selections in the 2027 NFL Draft provides New York with substantial flexibility. Rather than rolling the dice now on a player carrying notable baggage, the organization may prefer to exercise patience and target higher-ceiling options in next year’s class.

As the supplemental draft approaches, Sorsby’s situation underscores the delicate balance NFL teams must strike between talent acquisition and risk management. While his arm talent and athleticism could tempt certain clubs, the shadow of recent controversies may limit the bidding and ultimately determine his landing spot.

The coming weeks will reveal whether any franchise views the reward as worth the potential complications.
