Arik Armstead’s first NFL season with the Jacksonville Jaguars did not go as planned. After spending nine seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, the 31-year-old defensive lineman faced a transition that brought a new role and challenges.
Signed to a three-year deal after his release from the 49ers, Armstead was expected to contribute to a Jaguars defense that had finished 17th in scoring defense the previous season. However, the season proved difficult for the team as they finished with a 4-13 record, ranking 27th in scoring defense and 31st in yards allowed. Armstead, who had been a force on the interior of the defensive line for most of his career, was shifted to a rotational edge rusher role behind Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen.
The change in position and the struggles of the defense reflected in Armstead’s statistics, as he finished with just two sacks, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2015. He logged just 70 snaps at defensive tackle throughout the season, the lowest of his career outside of a six-game 2017 season.
“I haven’t not started in a long time,” Armstead said after the season ended, reflecting on the challenges of his new role. “It was a position change for me. Next year, I got a lot planned, so I’ll just leave it at that.”
Despite the disappointing results for both himself and the team, Armstead remained positive. He expressed respect for former head coach Doug Pederson, calling him a “great person” and “great coach,” but acknowledged that a change in leadership could bring new opportunities for his career.
“My plan is to switch back inside,” Armstead added. “That was what I wanted to do this season as well. I’m gonna be back playing to an elite player that I know I can be.”
Armstead’s most productive season came in 2019, when he racked up 10 sacks as a primary edge rusher for the 49ers. In recent years, his role shifted more toward defensive tackle, and it’s clear that he believes his best position is inside. With the Jaguars likely undergoing changes under new leadership, Armstead is confident he can return to his elite form.
“I’ve been through every situation in the league, and I’ve always overcome it,” Armstead said. “I’ve been in situations like this before where I had to break out of something and overcome it. I’m excited to do that next year.”
Arik Armstead’s resilience and experience could be key for the Jacksonville Jaguars as they aim to rebuild their defense in 2025. While the 2024 season was challenging, he remains determined to make a stronger impact moving forward and help lead Jacksonville to better results.
