Indianapolis Colts cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt has been fined $7,791 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness, adding another penalty to an already rocky start in Indianapolis, via NFL.com.
The fine stems from the Colts’ preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 29, a 25-16 loss. Taylor-Britt was flagged in the second quarter for unnecessary roughness. League officials later reviewed the play and issued the largest on-field fine from Week 3 of the preseason.
Under the NFL’s fine schedule, that money would normally come out of a player’s Week 1 game check. Taylor-Britt will not receive one.
He is already serving a one-game suspension without pay for violating the league’s personal conduct policy and will miss Indianapolis’s season opener against the Baltimore Ravens. The $7,791 will instead be deducted from his Week 2 paycheck.
The suspension traces to traffic cases from 2025, when Taylor-Britt was still with the Cincinnati Bengals. He pleaded guilty in January 2026 to reckless driving and driving without a valid license after two stops in the Cincinnati area, including an incident near Paycor Stadium after a home game. A Hamilton County judge sentenced him to five days in jail. The NFL announced the one-game ban on Aug. 7.
Taylor-Britt, a second-round pick in 2022 out of Nebraska, signed a one-year deal with the Colts in March after four seasons in Cincinnati.
He is expected to provide depth behind Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward once eligible. The combined suspension and fine mean he will lose a Week 1 check plus additional money from Week 2 before he plays a regular-season snap in Indianapolis.
Only four other players were fined for preseason Week 3 infractions, an unusually small list.
That group included Buffalo’s Jalon Kilgore ($5,560, illegal use of the helmet), Minnesota’s Jermar Jefferson ($5,583, facemasking), New Orleans’ Danny Stutsman ($7,011, illegal use of the helmet), and Pittsburgh’s Doneiko Slaughter ($4,917, taunting). Taylor-Britt’s penalty was the largest of the week.
The NFL and NFL Players Association jointly set the fine process. Officiating reviews plays and refers potential violations to football operations, which decides whether a fine is warranted.
Preseason hits still count; the league’s stated aim is to protect players and enforce expectations for how the game is played.
For the Colts, the immediate impact is limited. Taylor-Britt was already unavailable for Week 1. The fine is another reminder that his transition from Cincinnati has included both on-field and off-field consequences.
He can return in Week 2 if reinstated as scheduled.
