The Indiana Fever have been making strides early in the 2024 WNBA season. But, the improvements aren’t resulting in victories, as even Caitlin Clark’s heroics on Tuesday night weren’t enough to defeat the Los Angeles Sparks.
In a battle between the only one-win teams in the league, and the top two picks in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Cameron Brink and the Sparks came away victorious. Despite a huge game from the Iowa star, they defeated the Indiana Fever 88-82.
Brink scored only three points, three rebounds and two assists in a quiet game. But, there was some ugliness you would expect from the two teams with the worst records in the WNBA. The Sparks had 19 turnovers while Indiana shot only 38.2 percent from the field.
Tuesday was by far Caitlin Clark’s best game as a pro. She scored 30 points with six assists, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals as she stuffed the stat sheet. The only blemish was the seven turnovers she committed.
In the process, Caitlin Clark added her name to the WNBA record book. According to ESPN, she is the first rookie with at least 30 points, three steals and three blocks in a game. The 30 points are the third most by a rookie in Fever history; 32 points by Tamika Catchings twice is the only scoring total higher.
“I think I just played with an aggressive mindset,” Clark said. “I think that was the biggest thing — to play downhill the best I could. We did some good things and then we just kind of shot ourselves in the foot.”
When you have a young team, mistakes are expected. The WNBA schedule makers also did the Indiana Fever no favors, as they have played five games against the top three teams in the league in 2023.
Losers in seven out of eight games this season, Caitlin Clark has already lost as much or more in a few weeks in the WNBA than she did in either of her last two seasons collegiately.
Despite that, the Indiana Fever are still a huge draw. They nearly sold out Gainbridge Fieldhouse again with 16,103 in the house. Indiana Pacers stars Tyrese Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard and Benedict Mathurin were in attendance, along with former Indianapolis Colts T.Y. Hilton, Shaquille Leonard and current safety Nick Cross.
