After the Dallas Cowboys were beaten down by the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs, there is major speculation about the future of head coach Mike McCarthy. Many believe that Jerry Jones has no other option but to fire him and find a new coach. If he chooses to do that, Jim Harbaugh may emerge as a front-runner for the job.
According to one NFL league source, the Cowboys have shown interest in Harbaugh behind the scenes.
If the Cowboys fire McCarthy, they have been most widely connected to legendary head coach Bill Belichick. However, the source claims that there are major concerns in Dallas that Belichick would not fit well with the players or Jones. That could lead them to search other options out.
Why have they started doing research on Harbaugh behind the scenes? Quite frankly, the Cowboys want a coach that brings major discipline, but they also want an offensive minded coach to take over the reigns.
Ideally, the Cowboys would be able to find a more modern offensive head coach. McCarthy’s system is a good one, but it is quite dated. Dallas would want to find a coach who has more creativity on the offensive side of the ball.
Harbaugh has been known as a players coach, but a players coach that does it with discipline. He keeps players in line and gets the most out of them. Those are qualities that the Cowboys want to have if they make a coaching change.
Offensively, Harbaugh has been known for working very well with his quarterbacks. Dak Prescott is one of the more talented quarterbacks in the game, but always seems to falter when his team needs him the most. The hope would be that Harbaugh can figure out that side of the equation come playoff time.
These considerations are still very early and McCarthy could very well end up back as the Cowboys’ head coach. However, if they do opt for a change, it would be wise to keep a very close eye on Jim Harbaugh.
