Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore has a torn labrum in his shoulder and will have to undergo surgery, according to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News.

Gilmore’s status for the Cowboys’ Wild Card Round matchup with the Green Bay Packers was up in the air because of the shoulder injury, but no one really knew the extent of it until now.

The veteran probably was not healthy enough to play in the blowout loss to the Packers, which was made evident when you watched his rather futile performance in trying to defend Green Bay’s receivers.

However, Gilmore did not want to let the opportunity of going on another deep playoff run in his career pass him by.

“I’m going on towards the end,” Gilmore said. “I tried to give it all I’ve got. I still felt like I could play. Tried to give it a go. Got to take advantage of these opportunities.”

Dallas acquired Gilmore in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason. He played in all 17 games this season, registering 68 tackles, a couple of interceptions, a forced fumble and 13 passes defended.

The 33-year-old is set to hit free agency this offseason, leaving his future with the Cowboys in question. But right now, Gilmore is still reeling from the shocking 48-32 loss.

“I just didn’t see that coming, honestly,” he said. “Obviously, they were the better team [Sunday]. … That’s what it comes down to in the playoffs.”

Stephon Gilmore spent the first five years of his career with the Buffalo Bills, making one trip to the Pro Bowl. He then made his way to the New England Patriots, where he made three Pro Bowl appearances and earned a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections in four years. He also helped lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl title.

He then spent one season with the Carolina Panthers and one year with the Colts before joining the Cowboys.
