Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith missed his team’s Week 14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers due to a groin injury, but head coach Pete Carroll provided an encouraging update for Smith heading into the club’s Week 15 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Smith was limited in practice on Thursday, but Carroll seems to like what he saw from the signal-caller.

“He had a good lift this morning, so we’ll see how each day goes, but one day at a time and we’ll figure that out,” Carroll said, via Brady Henderson of ESPN. “I know it’s a big concern to everybody, but he feels really good. He threw the heck out of the ball in the morning session, so we’ll see what happens today with the [real] hope that he’s ready to go. And if not, Drew [Lock]’s going to be there.”

Carroll added that Smith is aching to get back on the field.

“We’ll mix reps to make sure that everybody’s prepared, but that’s a good sign for us and for Geno’s sake,” he said. “He wants to play in the worst way.”

That’s good, because the Seahawks also need Smith back in the worst way.

Seattle has lost four straight games to fall to 6-7 and now sits on the outside of the NFC playoff picture. There are currently six teams sitting at 6-7 in the conference, with all of them jostling for playoff positioning. Right now, the Green Bay Packers (who are 6-7 themselves) hold the seventh and final postseason spot in the NFC due to tiebreakers.

Geno Smith suffered the groin injury during his team’s Week 13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He has thrown for 2,918 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.1 this season. He has certainly taken a step back from his Pro Bowl campaign from 2022, but there is no doubt that the Seahawks need him back under center.

The 33-year-old initially joined Seattle as a backup to Russell Wilson in 2019 and was thrust into the starting role after the Seahawks traded Wilson in March 2022.

Seattle will battle the Eagles next Monday.
