Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is currently trudging through the most trying season of his NFL career, and an NFL analyst thinks his issues may be unfixable this year.
“For half a decade, Mahomes was entirely inevitable,” Matt Lane of the KC Sports Network wrote on X. “No matter the matchup, the situation, or what it looked like.. no team felt comfortable seeing him at QB across from them. This year’s version of the Chiefs has completely broken him and that feeling.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs are coming off of a brutal Christmas Day loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in which Mahomes went 27-for-44 with 235 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Kansas City mustered just 14 points on the day, marking the seventh time this season the team has scored under 20 points.
This from a club that ranked No. 1 in the NFL in scoring a year ago.
It was just the latest underwhelming performance from Mahomes, who has thrown an interception in each of his last four games.
On the season overall, Mahomes has thrown for 3,938 yards, 26 touchdowns and a career-worst 14 picks while completing 66.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 91.7.
While those certainly aren’t bad numbers, they are out of character for Mahomes, who has already won a pair of MVP awards while leading the Chiefs to two Super Bowl titles and three Super Bowl appearances.
Last season, for example, the 28-year-old led the NFL in both passing yards (5,230) and passing touchdowns (41) while throwing just 12 interceptions. He also completed 67.1 percent of his throws and registered a passer rating of 105.2. Not only that, but Mahomes averaged 308.8 passing yards per game. This year, he has only eclipsed 300 yards four times all season.
Kansas City fell to 9-6 with its loss to the Raiders and missed a chance to clinch the AFC West division title. In addition, the Chiefs now have no chance of getting home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They have lost three of their last four games and are just 3-5 over their last eight overall.
Patrick Mahomes and Co. will attempt to get on track when they host the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday. They will then wrap up the regular season when they head on the road to battle the Los Angeles Chargers on Jan. 7.
