Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is going through the most difficult season of his NFL career, and now, a Chiefs legend has offered up some advice to the two-time MVP.
During an appearance on Good Morning Football this week, former Chiefs wide receiver Dante Hall explained how he thinks Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense can get on track.
“Patrick Mahomes — I love you you’re my favorite quarterback, but I think you need to fall in love with the mundane,” Hall said. “Yes, for five years we have been used to the big plays to Tyreek (Hill) and to (Travis) Kelce and all of that — it’s time to be check -down Tom Brady. … Check downs — when it’s there, take it. Don’t look for the big play. Get a rhythm. If there’s a five-yard check down, throw it (to that player).”
That isn’t particularly bad advice, especially considering the Chiefs don’t exactly have a player like Hill in their receiving corps anymore.
Mahomes has certainly become accustomed to the explosive play, but this year, it just has not been there for him and the team.
Through 15 games, Mahomes has thrown for 3,938 yards, 26 touchdowns and a career-worst 14 interceptions while completing 66.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 91.7.
By contrast, last year, Mahomes led the league with 308.8 passing yards per game. This season, he has only eclipsed 300 passing yards four times. He is averaging 262.5 yards per game overall, which marks a career low.
The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M, was selected by Kansas City with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He became the Chiefs’ full-time starter in 2018 and has established himself as the league’s best quarterback ever since, making five straight trips to the Pro Bowl while earning a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections. Most importantly, he has led Kansas City to a couple of Super Bowl championships and three Super Bowl appearances.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are 9-6 this season and have lost three of their last four games. They are also just 3-5 over their last eight contests. They will take on the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend before closing out the regular season with the Los Angeles Chargers on Jan. 7.
