Bears Could Pursue Intriguing Veteran QB In Offseason

The Chicago Bears may revamp their quarterback situation this offseason, and Bill Barnwell of ESPN sees a potential target to fill a backup role: Jacoby Brissett.

Brissett is currently playing for the Washington Commanders but is slated to hit free agency this offseason. While Brissett isn’t a full-time starter, he is one of the most capable backups in football.

“Coach Matt Eberflus was the defensive coordinator with the [Indianapolis] Colts when Jacoby Brissett was thrust into the starting lineup after Andrew Luck’s retirement in 2019,” Barnwell wrote. “It’s possible the Bears could add a new backup to either mentor a rookie or provide a higher floor when [Justin] Fields misses time, but they wouldn’t be in the market for a significant veteran addition to start.”

Of course, the primary focus surrounding the Bears will be who they decide to start at quarterback next year. Will it be Fields? Or will Chicago take a signal-caller in the NFL Draft and potentially trade Fields?

Still, a team’s No. 2 signal-caller is important, especially when that player is as proven as Brissett.

Brissett, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida and North Carolina State, was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

The 31-year-old spent just one season with the Patriots before being traded to the Colts just before the start of the 2017 campaign, where he started in place of an injured Luck.

Brissett resided in Indianapolis for four seasons before making his way to the Miami Dolphins in 2021. He then linked up with the Cleveland Browns last year before joining the Commanders last spring.

Over the course of his NFL career, Brissett has played in 78 games and made 48 starts, amassing a total of 50 touchdowns and 23 interceptions while completing 61.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 85.

Brissett actually relieved Sam Howell last week in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, going 8-for-10 with 124 yards and a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The Bears are 5-9 and are getting set to take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday.
