The Buffalo Bills could end up re-working Josh Allen’s contract in order to free up some cap space this offseason.
Allen is set to earn $30 million in 2024 which would result in a $47 million cap hit. That’s why Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti thinks that the Bills should convert most of Allen’s 2024 base salary—$23.5 million—plus his $6 million roster bonus into a signing bonus. This move would open up $22.7 million in cap room for Buffalo.
The Bills are obviously hoping to contend for Super Bowl titles so long as Allen is under center, and with Allen being just 27 years old, his future in Buffalo has no end in sight. As a result, the Bills—who have been wildly inconsistent this season—would certainly like to keep as much money available as possible in order to shore up their roster when they need to.
Through the first 16 games of 2023, Allen has thrown for 3,947 yards, 27 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 91.5. In addition, he has rushed for 457 yards and 15 scores.
Allen, who played his collegiate football at the University of Wyoming, was selected by Buffalo with the seventh overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.
After a rough rookie campaign in which Allen totaled 10 touchdowns and 12 picks, he showed significant growth in his second season, finishing with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions through the air. He then broke out in 2020, finishing with 4,544 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 picks while rushing for 421 yards and eight scores en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Josh Allen registered 35 or more passing touchdowns in each season from 2020 through 2022, making a couple of trips to the Pro Bowl during that span.
The Bills have won four games in a row to push their record to 10-6. They will battle the Miami Dolphins with the AFC East division title on the line this Sunday.
