The Buffalo Bills fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in their Divisional Round playoff matchup on Sunday night, and they may have to prepare to lose one of their key offensive threats, as well.
After the game, wide receiver Gabe Davis said that he expects to hit free agency in March and that while he is open to returning to the Bills, “there was nothing” in terms of extension talks this season, according to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.
Given that Buffalo is well above the salary cap heading into the offseason, it stands to reason that Davis has played his last game in a Bills uniform, and that will sting for the team’s offense.
While Davis hasn’t exactly been consistent, his big-play ability has been a major weapon in Buffalo’s offense.
The 24-year-old played in all 17 games this season, hauling in 45 receptions for 746 yards and seven touchdowns.
Davis, who played his collegiate football at the University of Central Florida, was selected by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He appeared in every contest during his rookie campaign, finishing with 35 catches for 599 yards and seven scores. The following year, he posted nearly identical numbers, catching 35 passes for 549 yards while reaching the end zone six times.
It wasn’t until 2022 when Davis finally showed signs of breaking out, snaring 48 balls for 836 yards and seven touchdowns.
His production stagnated this season, so he is replaceable, but again, given Buffalo’s salary cap status, it’s going to be a tricky situation for the team to navigate this spring.
