Winning an NBA title is extremely difficult. Building a dynasty is even harder. When a team wins multiple championships in one period, fans should pay attention. After all, they’re witnessing history.

So, give credit to the Golden State Warriors. They’ve been the foremost dynasty in the NBA for some time. With that said, that dynasty may be coming to an end soon. The Warriors are below .500. This team has been struggling in 2023-24. Eventually, every dynasty comes to an end.

Just ask the Chicago Bulls. This team assembled perhaps the most impressive dynasty in the league’s history in the 1990s. With that said, it’s been a long time since the Bulls approached that level of success.

At the moment, they’re expected to begin rebuilding a failed win-now effort soon. Could they help the Warriors extend their dynasty by sending them DeMar DeRozan?

Chicago Bulls receive: G/F Klay Thompson, 2026 First-Round Pick (GSW), 2028 First-Round Pick (Top 5 Protected – GSW)
Golden State Warriors receive: G/F DeMar DeRozan, C Nikola Vucevic

Trading a player that was part of a dynasty can be difficult as well. NBA players and executives are human beings. They grow attached. Moving on from a player who helped a team reach the top of the league’s mountain is easier said than done.

At the same time, the NBA is a big business. What should teams do? They can’t hang onto players for emotional reasons. If a deal makes sense, a team should make the deal – no matter what the emotional implications are.

This is something that the Warriors are currently grappling with. There’s every reason to move Thompson if they want to stay in win-now mode. He is a shell of himself.

Could they finally bite the bullet and send him to the Bulls?

This would be a bold move for the Warriors. The acquisition of DeRozan would be especially intriguing. He’s not an immediate, obvious fit with this roster. DeRozan is a poor floor spacer, and the Warriors have built their dynasty behind the three-point arch.

Yet, that’s a simplified perspective. The Warriors run a motion offense. DeRozan can incorporate himself into their system.

He’s a smart player who’s developed into a great passer over the years. If this works, it will make the Warriors a much more dangerous team.

Either way, Vucevic feels like an obvious fit. He’s also a great passer, and he’d provide an element of floor spacing that the Warriors don’t currently have at the 5. This is a major win-now move for the Warriors.

Is it a fair price for the Bulls for two veterans?

Some Bulls fans will feel as if they’re getting the short end of this stick. We understand. In terms of name value, they should expect more for DeRozan and Vucevic. How about in terms of real value?

We think this is fair. DeRozan isn’t only a poor floor spacer – he’s a weak defender. So is Vucevic. Meanwhile, DeRozan is on an expiring contract.

The Bulls aren’t going to get a tremendous haul of resources for either of these players. With that in mind, an unprotected first and a swap feels like a fair return.

Moreover, Thompson’s expiring deal should appeal to Chicago as well. If they’re going to eventually build a dynasty, they’ll need some financial flexibility.
