Stephen Curry does not plan to leave San Francisco when his contract expires. The Golden State Warriors guard said the idea of entering free agency next summer holds no appeal, in an interview with CNBC.

“No, not at all,” Curry said. “I’ve always stated that I want to be a lifer with Golden State, what we’ve built there, the fact that I get to run it back this year with Draymond and Coach Kerr.”

“So all the contract stuff, this NBA thing from year to year is so crazy,” Curry continued. “Things change really fast. But I do know my interest and mission to stay in Golden State and be competitive is there. And the contract stuff will take care of itself.”

Curry enters the final season of his contract. He signed a one-year, $62.6 million extension in August 2024 that runs through the 2026-27 season.

Since then, he has become eligible to add years. Curry can sign a two-year extension worth up to $136.7 million, but he has not signed it.

The money matters for the roster around him. If Curry signs for the maximum allowed in the first season of an extension, $65.7 million, Golden State projects to have between $45 million and $60 million in cap space next offseason, ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported.

Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler can also become free agents after this season.

Curry turns 39 in March. This is his age-38 season, and he and Green are among four players in franchise history who have spent their entire careers with the Warriors.

Golden State finished 37-45 last season, went to the play-in tournament as the 10th seed in the West and lost its elimination game to Phoenix.

Butler tore a knee ligament in January. Curry missed 27 games with a right knee injury of his own, and Moses Moody tore a patellar tendon in late March.

Curry still scored 48 points at Portland on Dec. 14. That gave him 45 games of 40 or more points after turning 30, the most in NBA history, passing Michael Jordan.

He also moved into 19th place on the league’s career scoring list.

Green re-signed on a one-year deal this summer. Steve Kerr signed a two-year contract, and Golden State brought back Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, De’Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II.

Porzingis got two years and a reported $40 million. Rookie big man Yaxel Lendeborg, the Summer League MVP, joins that frontcourt, and Georges Niang and Brandon Williams also signed.

Quinten Post and Pat Spencer left.

The Warriors pursued LeBron James in July before he signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. James left the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons and called it his last decision.

Golden State also tried to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo at last season’s deadline, but Milwaukee kept him through the remainder of the season.

Curry has won four championships and two MVP awards, all with the Warriors.

His contract runs through the 2026-27 season.
